The world is full of talented people, including talented cricketers. But talent doesn’t always buy great leadership. In some cases talent can get in the way!
The pressure of attaining the best result can come at a enormous cost. How far are we willing to “do whatever it takes” to get the outcomes we desire?
Australian Cricket has just learnt this costly lesson.
Building a culture of engagement
My experience is that the ‘soft skills’ of business, those around building trust, a culture of engagement and priority on building a great place to work, often end up in the ‘too hard’ basket.
Business owners/leaders see the value of building these soft skills. But where do you find the time and where do you start?
Leaders determine business culture
Leadership in any organization has a big responsibility. It is a lot more than just getting a result. A leader needs to engender a culture of high trust and collaboration. This is how high performing organisations maximize outcomes. They are “values driven” rather than purely “market driven”.
Leadership = “Emotional Intelligence”
Additionally, effective leaders need to be emotionally intelligent (EI). That means being aware of how their behaviour impacts on others and the organisation. Too many managers are in positions of responsibility due to their technical ability not their EI. In culture, relationships rule!
Looking in the ‘Leadership Mirror’
Do you know of clients, or associates, who:
- Struggle to understand how to better engage their people?
- Are technically very competent, but are often unaware of the impact their attitude has on others?
- Excel at managing process but struggle to lead and empower others?
It is a common problem we all see around ourselves, may be it affect us too. To change the dynamics, you need a good “circuit breaker”, a catalyst, and follow up with a commitment to apply a new approach.
To fast-track this new strength, they can simply invest just a few days in
- understanding how they function under pressure as leaders, guided by an unbiased leadership specialist
- experiencing what works and doesn’t work for them, and what they can do about it.
